Comparing Genetic Risk for Sleep Patterns in People with Bipolar Disorder I, Bipolar Disorder II, and Without Bipolar Disorder

Abstract

Among 4,672 participants with bipolar disorder, insomnia polygenic risk scores were associated with an increased risk of bipolar disorder subtype II.

  • Insomnia polygenic risk scores were linked to a relative risk of 1.14 for bipolar disorder subtype II, indicating a potential genetic connection.
  • Sleep-duration polygenic risk scores showed a relative risk of 1.10 for bipolar disorder subtype I, suggesting a different genetic association.
  • No associations were found between polygenic risk scores for chronotype or daytime sleepiness and either bipolar disorder subtype.
  • Findings were replicated in an independent Swedish sample, reinforcing the observed distinctions in genetic liability for sleep traits between bipolar disorder subtypes.
