How Having Both Gestational Diabetes and Pregnancy High Blood Pressure Affects Baby Growth and Early Health Problems

Updated

Abstract

In a study of 47,093 singleton pregnancies, the rate of appropriate for gestational age birthweight was 78.2% for those with both gestational diabetes and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, compared to 84.9% for unaffected pregnancies.

  • Pregnancies with both gestational diabetes and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy showed decreased odds of appropriate for gestational age birthweight compared to unaffected pregnancies.
  • The absolute risk of large for gestational age birthweight was 14.5% in pregnancies with both conditions, higher than the 8.2% risk in unaffected pregnancies.
  • No statistically significant association was found between the co-occurrence of both conditions and the risk of small for gestational age birthweight.
  • Pregnancies affected by both conditions had a higher risk of neonatal morbidity compared to those with either condition alone.
  • The increased risk of neonatal morbidity in pregnancies with both conditions was quantified with an odds ratio of 3.13.
