Chronic ethanol feeding in wild-type rats increased GLP-1 and GLP-1 receptor levels, while GHSR-KO rats did not show this increase.

  • Increased serum levels of ghrelin and GLP-1 were observed after chronic alcohol exposure.
  • Despite higher GLP-1 levels, chronic ethanol feeding resulted in insulin resistance and disrupted liver fat metabolism.
  • GHSR knockout rats exhibited increased insulin sensitivity and resistance to alcohol-associated liver disease despite lower GLP-1 levels.
  • Ghrelin was found to promote the interaction between ghrelin receptors and GLP-1 receptors, diminishing GLP-1's effects.
  • In-silico analysis identified specific amino acid residues that may mediate the receptor interactions influenced by alcohol-induced ghrelin increases.
