Glabridin may slow osteoarthritis by affecting a cell recycling pathway

Updated

Abstract

Glabridin (Gla) significantly attenuated OA progression in a mouse model, as indicated by improved OARSI scores.

  • Gla mitigates IL-1β-induced degradation of the extracellular matrix in chondrocytes.
  • Gla directly binds to FOXO3A, facilitating its dephosphorylation and movement into the nucleus.
  • Activation of autophagy-related genes is associated with Gla's effects on chondrocytes.
  • Inhibition of autophagy with 3-MA worsens OA pathology, which Gla partially reverses.
