Worldwide loss of natural night environments caused by artificial light

Updated

Abstract

By 2012, direct artificial light at night (ALAN) emissions impacted 71.9% of possible nighttime terrestrial environmental conditions.

  • Temperate nighttime environments and highly modified habitats are disproportionately affected by ALAN.
  • From 2012 to 2022, direct ALAN emissions expanded within 34.4% of environmental space where it was already present, primarily in tropical regions.
  • Only 13.2% of environmental space continues to experience natural light cycles.
  • The distribution of ALAN suggests a significant loss of natural light cycles across various ecosystems.
