GLP-1 Drug's Link to Surgical Wound Problems After Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

Updated

Abstract

Patients using GLP-1 agonists experienced higher rates of surgical site complications compared to those not using these medications.

  • The risk of surgical wound healing complications was higher in patients taking GLP-1 agonists compared to non-users.
  • For panniculectomy, complications occurred in 4.7% of GLP-1 users versus 2.7% of non-users (p = 0.05).
  • In abdominoplasty, the complication rates were 9.8% for GLP-1 users compared to 3.6% for others (p = 0.001).
  • Breast reduction patients on GLP-1 agonists had a complication rate of 2.6%, while it was 1.3% for non-users (p = 0.035).
  • These findings suggest a need for careful patient counseling about the risks associated with weight loss medications prior to surgery.
