Balancing the Benefits and Risks of GLP-1 and GLP-1/GIP Drugs for Obesity
Updated
Abstract
GLP-1 and GLP-1/GIP agonists can support major short-term weight loss in obesity but carry adverse-effect, discontinuation, lean-mass loss, and weight-regain concerns.
This review summarizes reported benefits and harms of GLP-1-based obesity drugs, including effects on obesity-related diseases, gastrointestinal events, lean tissue loss up to 33%, discontinuation up to 80% after 2 years, and regain up to two-thirds of prior weight loss.
The abstract does not describe a new trial or pooled analysis, so its recommendations depend on the reviewed evidence rather than a single quantified study design.
