Abstract

Glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) receptors on intrahepatic sinusoidal endothelial cells are key mediators of semaglutide's hepatoprotective effects.

Semaglutide may exert protective effects on the liver independent of weight loss.
The study highlights the role of GLP-1 receptors in liver health.
Understanding these mechanisms could lead to better therapeutic approaches for metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis.

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) remains a major unmet clinical challenge. A new study by Gonzalez-Rellan et al.¹ shows that glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) receptors on intrahepatic sinusoidal endothelial cells are key mediators of semaglutide's weight loss-independent hepatoprotective effects, reframing our understanding of how GLP-1-based therapies act within the diseased liver.
