Six-month use, sticking to treatment, and effectiveness of GLP-1 medicines for overweight and obesity in Medicaid patients

Updated

Abstract

Essence

In a Massachusetts Medicaid population, GLP-1 obesity treatment showed moderate 6-month persistence and adherence, with strong weight loss among a highly adherent subgroup.

Evidence

This retrospective claims-based analysis of 7,493 MassHealth adults starting semaglutide or tirzepatide found 60.8% persistence, 60.1% adherence, and at least 5% weight loss in 86.5% of a documented subgroup at 6 months.

Caveat

The weight-loss result came from a subgroup selected through prior-authorization recertification and high persistence or adherence, so it may not represent the full treated population.
