Using GLP-1 receptor drugs before weight loss surgery and their effects on weight loss and body fat

Updated

Abstract

Preoperative GLP1-RA therapy resulted in a 5.1% weight loss compared to 2.4% in patients without prior treatment.

  • GLP1-RA was utilized by 34.8% of patients prior to bariatric surgery, predominantly liraglutide and semaglutide.
  • Patients receiving GLP1-RA experienced a significant reduction in fat mass before surgery compared to those not treated.
  • Adverse events related to GLP1-RA were mild, primarily gastrointestinal symptoms.
  • At one month post-surgery, those on GLP1-RA maintained greater weight loss compared to the non-treated group.
  • No differences in body composition or lean mass were noted between groups at six months post-surgery.
