Use of GLP-1 receptor drugs and risk of kidney damage after contrast scans in adults with type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease

Updated

Abstract

Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist (GLP-1 RA) use may be linked to contrast-associated acute kidney injury (CA-AKI) in adults with type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease.

  • Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CE-CT) and computed tomographic angiography (CTA) are common imaging techniques that can pose risks for kidney injury.
  • Adults with type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease may have an elevated risk of acute kidney injury after receiving contrast agents.
  • GLP-1 RA use is being evaluated for its potential relationship with CA-AKI in this patient population.
  • Understanding this association could inform clinical decisions regarding the use of GLP-1 RAs in patients undergoing imaging procedures.
