GLP-1 Receptor Agonist Treatment for Obesity in Japan: Effects of Lifestyle Before Treatment, Limited Treatment Time, and Weight Regain After Stopping

Updated

Abstract

A cohort of patients with obesity was treated with semaglutide or tirzepatide under Japan's GLP-1 receptor agonist therapy guidelines.

  • Insurance reimbursement for GLP-1 receptor agonist therapy is contingent upon completing a 6-month lifestyle intervention.
  • Treatment duration is limited to 68 weeks for semaglutide 2.4 mg and 72 weeks for tirzepatide.
  • A mandated washout period follows the treatment phase.
  • Pre-treatment weight change during the lifestyle phase may influence the response to the medication.
  • On-treatment response and subsequent weight regain after cessation were evaluated in the real-world cohort.
