Treatment with GLP-1 Receptor Agonists is Linked to Better Results in Arteriovenous Fistulas

Updated

Abstract

Among 1,239 matched patients, GLP-1 receptor agonist therapy is associated with a lower risk of fistula thrombosis, stenosis, and infection at one year.

  • GLP-1 receptor agonist therapy shows a 23% reduced risk of fistula thrombosis compared to non-GLP-1RA controls.
  • The risk of stenosis is 18% lower in patients receiving GLP-1RA therapy.
  • Infection risk decreases by 39% with GLP-1RA treatment.
  • Dialysis catheter interventions are reduced by 37% in patients on GLP-1RA.
  • Open revisions are 43% less likely in patients treated with GLP-1RA.
  • Protective effects of GLP-1RA were evident as early as twelve weeks post-AVF creation.
