Using GLP-1 Receptor Agonists Before Knee Replacement Surgery is Linked to Lower Risk of Heart Attack and Blood Clots After Surgery

Updated

Abstract

Patients prescribed GLP-1 receptor agonists had a lower risk of myocardial infarction after total knee arthroplasty, with an incidence of 25 events compared to 47 in controls.

  • GLP-1 receptor agonist use was associated with a reduced risk of deep vein thrombosis, with 74 events compared to 103 in the control group.
  • There was also a reduction in the risk of venous thromboembolism, observed as 133 events in the GLP-1 RA group versus 172 in controls.
  • No significant difference was found in the incidence of pulmonary embolism between patients on GLP-1 receptor agonists and controls.
  • Overall, preoperative use of GLP-1 receptor agonists may lower the risk of specific postoperative thrombotic events after total knee arthroplasty.
