Updated

Abstract

A total of 27 studies were included in the review, with 13 studies providing data for efficacy meta-analyses.

  • Preoperative use of GLP-1 receptor agonists is associated with improved preoperative weight loss, showing a pooled effect size of 0.52.
  • Postoperative weight loss at 12 months was lower by 2.85 percentage points in the preoperative medication group compared to the non-medication group.
  • Initiating GLP-1 receptor agonists around 1 month after surgery led to an additional 3.62 percentage points of total body weight loss at 6 months.
  • Starting GLP-1 receptor agonists around 6 months post-surgery resulted in an additional weight loss of 7.48 kg compared to controls.
  • For rescue therapy, GLP-1 receptor agonists led to an additional 10.30 percentage points of endpoint weight loss compared to placebo or usual care.
  • Common adverse events included nausea (25.3%), constipation (19.0%), diarrhea (9.2%), and vomiting (8.6%), while serious adverse events were uncommon.
