GLP-1 receptor agonists and thinking skills in people with type 2 diabetes: A review of clinical trials

Updated

Abstract

Essence

GLP-1 receptor agonists may improve cognitive test scores in people with type 2 diabetes, with larger gains reported in longer treatment studies.

Evidence

This systematic review and meta-analysis pooled 18 randomized controlled trials with 11,114 participants and found higher MMSE and MoCA scores with GLP-1 receptor agonists than with placebo or conventional therapy.

Caveat

Interpretation is limited by substantial between-study heterogeneity, with I2 of 82% for MMSE and 96% for MoCA.
