Effects of GLP-1 Receptor Drugs on Thinking Skills in Adults at Risk for Alzheimer's Disease

Updated

Abstract

A total of 13,711 participants were included from five randomized controlled trials investigating the effects of GLP-1 receptor agonists on cognitive performance.

  • Global cognition showed a mean effect size of g = 0.014, indicating no significant change.
  • Attention demonstrated a mean effect size of g = 0.072, also suggesting no significant improvement.
  • Single-study estimates for delayed memory, executive function, and verbal function were reported due to limited compatible data.
  • A sensitivity analysis excluding one major trial indicated a non-significant effect estimate for global cognition, suggesting uncertainty in results.
  • Current evidence does not support a consistent beneficial effect of GLP-1 receptor agonists on cognitive function in adults at risk of Alzheimer's disease.
