Link Between GLP-1 Drugs and Colon Cancer Risk in Adults with Type 2 Diabetes or Obesity
Updated
Abstract
In 17 randomized clinical trials involving 36,415 patients, GLP-1 receptor agonists were associated with a significantly reduced risk of colon cancer (RR, 0.34).
- GLP-1 receptor agonists showed a neutral effect on the risks of colorectal carcinoma, rectal cancer, and intestinal cancer.
- Relative risks for colorectal carcinoma, rectal cancer, and intestinal cancer were 1.13, 3.64, and 0.76, respectively.
- A potential association was noted between specific GLP-1 receptor agonists and reduced colon cancer incidence in patients with lower baseline HbA1c levels.
- Longer treatment duration with albiglutide and subcutaneous semaglutide was linked to a lower risk of colon cancer.
- Further validation is needed in trials targeting high-risk populations with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
