GLP-1 Receptor Agonists with Insulin Compared to Insulin Alone for Blood Sugar Control Around Heart Surgery in Type 2 Diabetes

Updated

Abstract

The perioperative use of liraglutide was associated with preliminary evidence of improved glycemic control in 168 patients with type 2 diabetes undergoing cardiac surgery.

  • Lower blood glucose levels were observed during the preoperative, intraoperative, and early postoperative periods with liraglutide compared to insulin or placebo.
  • Reduced glycemic variability and fewer insulin adjustments were noted with liraglutide therapy.
  • The incidence of hypoglycemia remained low among patients receiving liraglutide.
  • Mild gastrointestinal adverse events, such as nausea and vomiting, occurred more frequently with liraglutide treatment.
  • The findings are limited due to variability in dosing, timing, and monitoring across the studies reviewed.
