GLP-1 receptor drugs and lymphedema: from weight loss to possible direct effects on lymph fluid drainage

Updated

Abstract

Case reports and a retrospective cohort have linked glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) with reduced limb volume and improved symptoms in users.

  • Obesity and lymphedema are interconnected through mechanisms including fluid overload and inflammation.
  • GLP-1RAs may improve lymphatic function either by promoting weight loss or through direct effects on lymphatic vessels.
  • Pharmacological activation of GLP-1 receptors has been shown to enhance the pumping capacity of isolated lymphatic vessels in experimental settings.
  • Current evidence does not confirm clinical efficacy in human lymphedema but suggests potential benefits in symptom management.
  • Future studies should differentiate between weight-loss-related and direct effects of GLP-1RAs on lymphedema management.
