Combined use of GLP-1 and SGLT2 drugs in heart and metabolism diseases: do their effects add up or not?

Abstract

The combination of GLP-1 receptor agonists and SGLT2 inhibitors produced greater reductions in HbA1c by 1.0 to 1.5%, body weight by 3 to 9 kg, and systolic blood pressure by 4 to 10 mmHg compared with either agent alone.

  • Combination therapy is associated with significant reductions in HbA1c, body weight, and systolic blood pressure.
  • Observational studies indicate a reduction in major adverse cardiovascular events and heart failure hospitalizations when using the combination therapy.
  • Both drug classes provide cardiovascular and renal benefits in non-diabetic populations at standard doses.
  • Randomized trial data do not consistently show superiority in cardiovascular event rates with combination therapy.
  • Effects on renal outcomes vary across studies.
  • Combination therapy is generally well tolerated, with no significant increase in serious adverse events beyond those expected from individual agents.
