Comparing Health and Metabolism Outcomes of Two Diabetes Drugs in People with Type 1 Diabetes in Saudi Arabia

Updated

Abstract

GLP-1 receptor agonists led to significant reductions in HbA1c and weight in 112 adult patients with Type 1 Diabetes over 12 months.

  • Patients on GLP-1 receptor agonists were younger and had a shorter duration of diabetes compared to those on SGLT2 inhibitors.
  • SGLT2 inhibitor patients exhibited higher albumin-to-creatinine ratios and increased statin use.
  • GLP-1 therapy resulted in lower HbA1c levels and significant weight loss.
  • SGLT2 treatment improved renal markers and reduced the required insulin dosage.
  • LDL cholesterol decreased significantly in the GLP-1 group, while the SGLT2 group showed improved HDL and total cholesterol levels.
  • Comorbidities and diabetes-related complications were similar between the two treatment groups.
