Semaglutide lowers alcohol drinking and anxiety-like behavior during withdrawal in alcohol-preferring rats

Updated

Abstract

Semaglutide reduced voluntary alcohol consumption in a dose-dependent manner in alcohol-preferring rats.

  • Anxiety-related behaviors were reduced during withdrawal following treatment with semaglutide.
  • The highest dose of semaglutide (0.1 mg/kg) affected locomotion and stress responses in rats.
  • In nave rats, semaglutide lowered blood glucose levels and decreased fat mass.
  • Semaglutide also reduced GABAergic transmission in the infralimbic medial pre-frontal cortex.
