Stronger early GLP-1 hormone increase after Roux-en-Y than one-anastomosis gastric bypass, with no change in secretin levels

Abstract

Both Roux-en-Y and one-anastomosis gastric bypass procedures resulted in ~25% weight loss and significant metabolic improvements over 12 months.

  • Postprandial GLP-1 concentrations rose significantly at 6 months, with RYGB showing a ~330% increase and OAGB a ~259% increase.
  • Early-phase GLP-1 levels were 31% higher after RYGB compared to OAGB at 6 months and 25% higher at 12 months.
  • Peak GLP-1 increases were approximately 32% greater after RYGB at both 6 and 12 months.
  • RYGB was associated with a greater reduction in hunger from baseline to 12 months compared to OAGB.
  • Fasting and postprandial secretin concentrations did not show significant changes after either procedure.
  • Glucose responses were more favorable after RYGB, with greater increases in early-phase glucose AUC and peak concentrations compared to OAGB.
