Variations in a Hormone Receptor Gene Change How Gestational Diabetes Affects Children's BMI Growth

Abstract

Exposure to maternal gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is associated with higher average BMI in youth with specific genetic variants.

  • Youth carrying at least one minor allele of the glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor gene variants rs10305420 or rs1042044 showed higher average BMI when exposed to GDM.
  • Participants with the GG genotype of rs6923761 exposed to GDM had significantly higher average BMI compared to those with other genotypes.
  • No genetic polymorphisms were found to modify the relationship between GDM and glucose-insulin homeostasis markers during adolescence.
  • The findings suggest that GLP-1R polymorphisms may influence how GDM affects BMI growth in children.
