Combination therapy with GLP-1RA and SGLT2i and liver scarring progression in fatty liver disease with type 2 diabetes

Abstract

Combination therapy with GLP-1 receptor agonists and SGLT2 inhibitors is associated with a lower risk of fibrosis progression in patients with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus.

  • Combination therapy users had a risk of fibrosis progression of 3.10 per 100 person-years compared to 4.01 per 100 person-years for monotherapy users.
  • The hazard ratio for fibrosis progression in combination therapy was 0.76, suggesting a protective effect.
  • A numerically lower incidence of hepatic complications was observed in the combination therapy group, at 1.05 per 100 person-years, compared to 1.34 for monotherapy.
  • Subgroup analyses indicated significant benefits for patients with a BMI of 35 or lower.
  • Sensitivity analyses supported reduced fibrosis progression in both the ≥90-day and ≥180-day assessments.
