Heart health outcomes of two diabetes drugs in fatty liver disease and type 2 diabetes: real-world data

Updated

Abstract

A cohort of 52,094 patients with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease and type 2 diabetes showed that glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists are associated with a lower risk of major adverse cardiovascular events compared to sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors.

  • GLP-1 receptor agonist use was linked to a hazard ratio of 0.86 for major cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events compared to SGLT2 inhibitors.
  • Significant reductions in the risks of heart failure, myocardial infarction, stroke, and all-cause mortality were observed with GLP-1 receptor agonists.
  • Findings were consistent across various sensitivity analyses, indicating robustness in the results.
