Abstract
GLP-1 receptor agonists are associated with modest reductions in blood pressure of 2 to 5 mmHg systolic.
- Blood pressure reductions may primarily result from weight loss.
- Potential weight-independent mechanisms include improved kidney function, better blood vessel health, and reduced inflammation in blood vessels.
- The blood pressure-lowering effects of GLP-1 receptor agonists, while smaller than traditional blood pressure medications, could still contribute to reducing cardiovascular risk on a larger scale.
- These medications are generally well tolerated among individuals with high blood pressure, though small increases in heart rate and interactions with certain medications may require monitoring.
- Emerging GLP-1 based therapies may enhance understanding and treatment of blood pressure in cardiometabolic care.
