How GLP1Ra affects lean body tissue as well as fat

Updated

Abstract

Glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists (GLP1Ra) may lead to reductions in lean tissue, including skeletal muscle and bone, while managing obesity and cardiometabolic disease.

  • GLP1Ra are effective for weight loss in individuals with obesity and cardiometabolic disease.
  • Treatment with GLP1Ra is associated with decreases in lean tissue mass.
  • Skeletal muscle and bone may be particularly affected by GLP1Ra treatment.
  • Strategies have been explored to reduce the loss of lean tissue during GLP1Ra therapy.
  • Future research is needed to address the impacts of GLP1Ra on muscle and bone health.
