Liraglutide treatment increased GLP-1 receptor expression in breast cancer cells and tumors.

  • Breast cancer cells showed increased GLP-1 receptor expression after liraglutide treatment.
  • At higher concentrations, liraglutide accelerated breast cancer progression both in vitro and in vivo.
  • The acceleration of cancer progression is linked to the NOX4/reactive oxygen species/vascular endothelial growth factor signaling pathway.
  • Inhibition of GLP-1 receptor with Exendin (9-39) counteracted the effects of liraglutide.
  • Liraglutide may promote malignant progression in triple negative breast cancer, highlighting the need for cautious use in diabetic patients.
