Use of a Glucagon-like Peptide-1 Drug and Recovery Results After Neck Spine Surgery for Degenerative Conditions

Updated

Abstract

A total of 737 patients were identified as having used GLP-1 receptor agonists prior to posterior cervical spinal fusion.

  • Patients on GLP-1 receptor agonists experienced a significantly higher risk of postoperative radiculopathy (hazard ratio: 1.367, p=.003).
  • There was a significant increase in the risk of infection (p=.013) and readmission (p<.001) for those on GLP-1 receptor agonists.
  • The cohort on GLP-1 receptor agonists had a significantly reduced incidence of pseudoarthrosis (2.7% vs. 5.2%, p=.019).
  • The reduced risk of pseudoarthrosis approached significance with a hazard ratio of 0.586 (p=.057) after matching.
