Use of Glucagon-like Peptide-1 Receptor Agonists Linked to Lower Risk of Joint Infection After Total Knee Replacement, Confirmed by Side-by-Side Comparison

Abstract

GLP-1 receptor agonist users experienced a significantly lower rate of periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) at 1.5% compared to 2.0% in non-users within a 2-year postoperative period.

  • Use of GLP-1 receptor agonists is associated with a reduced risk of PJI in total knee arthroplasty patients.
  • The risk ratio for PJI among GLP-1 RA users is 0.74, indicating a 26% lower risk compared to non-users.
  • In diabetic patients, GLP-1 RA users also show lower PJI rates at 1.7% versus 2.5% in non-users, with a risk ratio of 0.68.
  • No significant differences were found in rates of TKA revision, mechanical loosening, periprosthetic fractures, or other mechanical complications between the two groups.
  • This analysis uses laterality-verified methodology to enhance outcome attribution compared to previous studies.
