Glucagon-like peptide-1 drug treatment and long-term kidney health after complete kidney removal surgery

Updated

Abstract

After matching, 3316 patients were included in the analysis, revealing significant differences in renal outcomes based on GLP-1 RA therapy.

  • GLP-1 RA users had lower acute kidney injury (AKI) incidence at 1 year (6.3% vs 12.4%), 2 years (9.5% vs 16.8%), and 5 years (13.4% vs 22.1%).
  • Significantly lower incidence of CKD Stage 3 was observed in GLP-1 RA users at 1 year (12.3% vs 17.2%), 2 years (15.0% vs 21.7%), and 5 years (19.7% vs 25.4%).
  • CKD Stage 4 incidence was lower in the GLP-1 RA group at 1 year (3.1% vs 6.9%), 2 years (4.7% vs 9.0%), and 5 years (6.2% vs 10.9%).
  • At 2 years, CKD Stage 5 was lower in GLP-1 RA users (1.2% vs 3.9%) and at 5 years (1.7% vs 4.7%).
  • Dialysis dependence was reduced in GLP-1 RA users at 2 years (1.0% vs 5.6%) and 5 years (1.7% vs 7.3%).
  • Kaplan-Meier analyses indicated improved survival rates free of AKI, advanced CKD, and dialysis in the GLP-1 RA cohort.
