Anti-inflammatory effects of glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor activators in heart and blood vessel diseases

Updated

Abstract

GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) may have significant anti-inflammatory effects beyond their primary role in managing type 2 diabetes.

  • GLP-1RAs stimulate insulin secretion, a key function in managing type 2 diabetes.
  • They modulate inflammatory pathways by affecting cytokine production, oxidative stress, glucotoxicity, lipotoxicity, and immune cell recruitment.
  • GLP-1RAs can reduce the production of inflammatory cytokines and decrease immune cell infiltration in tissues.
  • There is evidence of overlapping pathways activated by GLP-1 in cardiovascular tissues, leading to protective effects.
  • Clinical studies indicate that GLP-1RAs have anti-inflammatory effects in conditions like acute myocardial infarction and coronary artery disease.
  • GLP-1RAs are recognized in European Society of Cardiology guidelines for cardiovascular disease management in patients with type 2 diabetes.
