How drugs that activate GLP-1 receptors may affect fertility, birth control, and pregnancy

Updated

Abstract

GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) may significantly improve spontaneous pregnancy rates in obese women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

  • Weight reduction and enhanced insulin sensitivity from GLP-1 RAs are associated with improved fertility outcomes in women with PCOS.
  • Gastrointestinal side effects of GLP-1 RAs could theoretically affect the absorption of oral contraceptives.
  • Animal studies suggest potential risks to fetal development, and limited human data indicate a need for washout periods before conception.
  • In men, metabolic improvements from GLP-1 RAs may indirectly enhance reproductive parameters.
  • Non-oral hormonal methods and long-acting reversible contraception may be more reliable contraceptive options during GLP-1 RA treatment due to gastrointestinal side effects.
