Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 Medicines and New Serious Liver Problems in People with Type 2 Diabetes and Fatty Liver Disease

Updated

Abstract

Over a median 4.3-year follow-up, new users of GLP-1 receptor agonists had a lower hazard of major adverse liver outcomes (HR 0.91).

  • GLP-1 receptor agonists may lead to a lower risk of major adverse liver outcomes compared to SGLT-2 inhibitors.
  • The association with lower hazard appeared stronger when considering on-treatment analysis (HR 0.78) and hospital diagnoses (HR 0.77).
  • Benefits were observed for liver cirrhosis (HR 0.88), decompensation events (HR 0.91), and hepatocellular carcinoma (HR 0.76).
  • No significant difference was found for all-cause mortality (HR 1.04).
