Glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor drugs and their possible link to sudden optic nerve damage

Updated

Abstract

A statistically significant association between glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) and nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) yields relative risk estimates between 1.2 and 4.3.

  • NAION is a sudden and irreversible cause of vision loss linked to optic nerve issues.
  • A small cup-to-disc ratio is identified as the strongest anatomical predictor of NAION.
  • Systemic microvascular diseases, including diabetes and hypertension, may increase the risk of optic nerve head ischemia.
  • Data indicate a very low absolute incidence of NAION in patients using GLP-1RAs.
  • Screening for disc-at-risk anatomy and counseling on visual symptoms may be necessary before starting GLP-1RA therapy.
