Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor drugs and osteoarthritis risk in people with type 2 diabetes

Updated

Abstract

Among 2,056,824 eligible patients, the incidence rates for osteoarthritis were 3.99 per 100 person-years for GLP-1RAs users and 4.36 for DPP4Is users.

  • The mean age of patients initiating GLP-1RAs was 45 years, while it was 56 years for those starting DPP4Is.
  • 55% of patients using GLP-1RAs were male, compared to 70% of DPP4Is users.
  • GLP-1RAs, including dulaglutide, were not associated with a reduced risk of osteoarthritis compared to DPP4Is.
  • The hazard ratio for incident osteoarthritis in GLP-1RA users compared to DPP4I users was 0.93, indicating no significant difference.
