Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 Drugs and Pancreatic Cancer Risk in People with Type 2 Diabetes

Updated

Abstract

In a cohort of 543,595 adults with type 2 diabetes, 6.1% used GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RA) over 9 years of follow-up.

  • No increased incidence of pancreatic cancer was associated with GLP-1RA treatment compared to basal insulin over the follow-up period.
  • A total of 1665 patients received diagnoses of pancreatic cancer during the study.
  • The hazard ratio for pancreatic cancer linked to GLP-1RA use was estimated at 0.50 in the fifth to seventh year, suggesting no significant increase in risk.
  • Similar findings were observed in new-user and prevalent new-user designs, with hazard ratios of 0.52 and 0.75, respectively, from the fifth year onwards.
  • Continued monitoring for pancreatic cancer risk beyond 7 years of GLP-1RA therapy is recommended.
