Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists and their effects on physical activity levels in adults

Updated

Abstract

GLP-1 receptor agonist treatment is associated with a significant reduction of 1144 steps/day in one study among adults with obesity.

  • Most studies found no significant differences in physical activity between GLP-1 RA and control groups.
  • Five studies indicated numerically lower free-living physical activity in GLP-1 RA-treated individuals.
  • Meta-analysis of three randomized controlled trials showed no significant pooled effect on physical activity.
  • Sensitivity analyses suggested a modest reduction in physical activity, potentially influenced by study design.
  • Structured exercise participation, including adherence and prescribed duration, remained comparable between groups.
