Effects of Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 Receptor Drugs During Early Pregnancy on Birth Outcomes

Updated

Abstract

An increasing number of women of childbearing age are using glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs).

  • Effective contraception is recommended for women using GLP-1 RAs.
  • Maternity services are seeing more cases of women exposed to GLP-1 RAs around conception or during pregnancy.
  • The actual prevalence of GLP-1 RA exposure in pregnancy may be underestimated due to inconsistent routine inquiries.
  • The impact of GLP-1 RA exposure on pregnancy outcomes is not well understood.
  • Limited guidance exists for counseling women who have unintentionally been exposed to GLP-1 RAs during conception.
