Glucagon-like peptide-1 drugs for preventing heart disease in type 2 diabetes: a systematic review

Updated

Abstract

In a review of 11 trials involving 77,419 participants, pooled estimates showed no significant cardiovascular benefit of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists in patients with type 2 diabetes without a history of cardiovascular disease.

  • Only 26% of participants were specifically in the primary cardiovascular disease prevention group.
  • The primary outcome, major adverse cardiovascular events, showed a pooled hazard ratio of 0.88, indicating no significant reduction.
  • All secondary outcomes, including all-cause mortality and serious adverse events, also did not show significant benefits.
  • The evidence was rated as low certainty due to potential biases and imprecision in the trials.
  • Current findings are insufficient to confirm cardiovascular benefits of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists for this patient population.
