Pre-surgery use of diabetes drugs does not reduce joint fusion failure after small hand bone surgery

Updated

Abstract

Analysis of 237 matched pairs showed no difference in pseudoarthrosis rates between patients using GLP-1 receptor agonists and those who were not.

  • Preoperative use of GLP-1 receptor agonists did not result in lower rates of pseudoarthrosis after small joint arthrodesis of the hand.
  • Rates of postoperative infection were similar between the GLP-1 receptor agonist group and the control group.
  • The GLP-1 receptor agonist group included 68.4% female and 65.0% White patients after balancing for demographic characteristics.
  • Findings suggest that factors related to the surgery itself may be more influential on the success of arthrodesis than metabolic status.
