Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 Receptor Agonists and Their Link to Risk of Blocked Blood Vessels in the Retina

Updated

Abstract

Significantly reduced risk of all vascular occlusions was observed in the glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist cohort at 1 year (HR, 0.66).

  • The glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist group included 53,413 patients after 1 year, 25,738 after 3 years, and 14,695 after 5 years.
  • Risk of all vascular occlusions showed a significant decrease at 1 year (HR, 0.66), 3 years (HR, 0.71), and 5 years (HR, 0.79).
  • Retinal vein occlusion risk was significantly lower in the glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist cohort up to 3 years (HR, 0.75), but not after 5 years (HR, 0.83).
  • No significant reduction in retinal artery occlusion risk was found at 1 year (HR, 0.69), although reductions were significant at later time points.
