Comparing two diabetes treatments on heart rhythm and heart health in adults with type 2 diabetes and irregular heartbeat

Updated

Abstract

GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RA) were associated with lower all-cause mortality (HR 0.64) compared to sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT-2i) in adults with concurrent atrial fibrillation and type 2 diabetes after 365 days.

  • GLP-1RA users experienced a reduced risk of hospitalization (HR 0.88) compared to SGLT-2i users.
  • The risk of three-point major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) was lower in the GLP-1RA group (HR 0.78).
  • Progression of atrial fibrillation was less frequent among those using GLP-1RA (HR 0.94).
  • Lower rates of atrial fibrillation ablation (HR 0.81) and cardioversion (HR 0.79) were observed in the GLP-1RA group.
  • The findings were consistent across different age and body mass index subgroups.
