Stress hormones encourage stem-like traits and chemotherapy resistance in human glioblastoma cells and their impact on disease outlook

Updated

Abstract

A negative correlation between glucocorticoid intake and progression-free survival was observed in a cohort of 48 glioblastoma patients.

  • Glucocorticoids may promote the development of a glioma stem cell-like phenotype in glioblastoma cells.
  • Dexamethasone treatment is associated with increased resistance to physiological stress and chemotherapy in these cells.
  • Increased glucocorticoid exposure could contribute to tumor recurrence following surgical excision.
  • The findings suggest that glucocorticoid treatment may compromise the effectiveness of chemotherapy for glioblastoma.
