Recommended Treatments for Diabetic Kidney Disease: New Developments in Preventing and Managing the Condition

Updated

Abstract

The global rise in diabetes could lead to a substantial increase in diabetic kidney disease (DKD) prevalence.

  • Guideline-directed medical therapy (GDMT) may help mitigate renal and cardiovascular risks associated with DKD.
  • Lifestyle interventions, including optimized diet, physical activity, and smoking cessation, are linked to significant benefits for kidney and heart health.
  • Pharmacologic treatments like SGLT2 inhibitors and GLP-1 receptor agonists have shown efficacy in reducing kidney disease progression and cardiovascular events.
  • Relative risk reductions of approximately 30-40% for kidney disease progression and 18-23% for renal and cardiovascular composite outcomes have been reported with certain medications.
  • Real-world implementation of GDMT is often suboptimal, especially in low-resource healthcare settings.
  • Routine screening for kidney function and timely initiation of GDMT may effectively alter the natural history of DKD.
