How Escitalopram May Improve Gut-Brain Interaction Symptoms in Older Adults

Updated

Abstract

A total of 83 elderly patients with disorders of gut-brain interaction were studied.

  • Patients receiving escitalopram oxalate showed significantly greater reductions in gastrointestinal and emotional symptom scores compared to those receiving standard treatment alone.
  • The exposure group exhibited a reduction in Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale scores from 22.58 ± 3.18 to 17.00 ± 0.85 after 12 weeks.
  • Alterations in gut microbiota were observed, with significant changes in the abundance of four genus-level taxa and two species-level taxa.
  • These findings suggest that escitalopram oxalate may influence both emotional and gastrointestinal symptoms through modifications in gut microbiota.
