Gut hormones reduce T cell-caused damage in the intestine

Updated

Abstract

Endogenous GLP-1R and GLP-2R signaling is essential for protecting the intestine from T cell-mediated enteropathy.

  • Gut injury from T cell activation is increased in mice lacking GLP-1R or GLP-2R.
  • Mice with selective loss of intestinal proglucagon gene expression also show increased intestinal damage.
  • Administration of the GLP-2R agonist teduglutide reduces intestinal damage in specific mouse models.
  • The GLP-1R agonist semaglutide also alleviates T cell-induced intestinal injury when administered alone or with teduglutide.
  • These findings suggest distinct protective roles for GLP-1R and GLP-2R in immune-mediated intestinal injury.
