Changes in gut bacteria variety and levels in women with PCOS

Updated

Abstract

Compared to healthy individuals, women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) exhibited significantly lower alpha diversity metrics of gut microbiota.

  • The Chao index and Shannon index were significantly lower in women with PCOS, indicating reduced diversity of gut bacteria.
  • Observed operational taxonomic units (OTUs) counts were also significantly lower in the PCOS group.
  • The relative abundance of the Bacteroidaceae family was significantly higher in women with PCOS.
  • No significant differences were found in the abundance of several other major bacterial groups between the two populations.
  • These findings suggest that alterations in gut microbiota may be associated with the pathology of PCOS.
